Just an update. Took exactly a week for my SPG points to transfer to JAL.

Called up today, was able to book REP->BKK, BKK->USM, USM->REP for 8k miles and $49 with no issues. The rep didn't even question it.

Not crazy value, but the flights were almost $400, so I'll take it.
