You know, for all airlines, a seat map is hardly a reflect of actual bookings. Airlines often blocks some seats (for advance seating selection) for whatever reasons (e.g. baby basinet) and release them after. Some bookings are also unconfirmed and never get confirmed.
I have seen countless times flights with all seats pre-booked and leaving quite empty or the opposite, few seats pre-selected and finally flight completely packed.

I do agree that the seat map isn't a correct display of purchased & assigned seats. However, because there are 3 of us (family) traveling together, and because there are total 24 (3 rows of 8) seats in PE, I need some form of guarantee that we will be seated together. And I think the only real guarantee is to be able to select the seats online before I pay... at least it gives a false sense of hope, since of course I know that the seats can be changed at any given moment by any airline
I'm still trying to figure this out...
