Chip in passport not being read

I was so excited last week to travel to the UK with my new (Danish) chipped passport. I looked forward to skipping lines and using the e-gates for passport control.

Well, I skipped the line, but then wasted AGES trying to get the machine to read the chip, got assistance, who then gave me up and sent me to the waiting officer.

So, is this to be expected? Is my chip faulty, was it a one-time issue?

On returning to Denmark, they don't read the chip, so I don't actually know if it is the chip, the format, or the machine.

DanishFlyer - much less excited about the new passport now :-(
