What I tried to say is:

- You either had cover to the are you went with all UK insurers
- Or with none of them
No, sorry, that's not correct. The travel insurance (Columbus Direct) I had been using specified something like 'any country which FCO advises against travel to' - that covered all of Uganda when I enquired, even though FCO only advised against travel to some areas. Hence I had to change insurer and found the Boots policy which would cover some claims in Uganda, whereas the Columbus Direct policy would not have accepted any claim within Uganda. Boots would cover me for any claims which arose which were not as a result of the actions of the LRA. Columbus Direct would not even have covered me for falling in a forest and breaking an ankle. Boots would have done.

The number of policies like the Boots policy, which allows travel to most countries, but has limited liability if you get into trouble because of the warning is few, but it is an important modifier. The coverage is not the same across all UK insurers. That's why you have to read the small print.

Since you seem to want to be covered for the risks associated with the reason for the warning on the FCO website though, you are right, you'll have to find a non-UK insurer since none of them are going to provide coverage for that (or for those very few specialists which do - the kind corporations use - they will charge you for that because of the increased risk they bear). Good luck with your search.

And in fairness, we might still have had an embassy in Tehran, except the Iranians set it on fire. Kind of hard to continue diplomatic relations with a government which is willing to do that.
