OP, all i can say is typically an airline would wait for their own pax more than they would for pax from other airlines (unless there are substantial connections like over 20 pax). Put it to context, UA is designed from US via North Asia and terminating to South Asia so naturally they protect their EWR pax over SIN pax.
I agree with what others have said and operate under the following principles:
1. Have ample time between connections (like several hours)
2. If you have a tight connection, make the airline aware ASAP before departure by phone, in the airport (HKG) at check in and not SIN
3. Follow up proactively and if ground staff in HKG sense the plane wont be leaving on time and have options, they can rebook you.
4. Call the airlines reservations center for assistance if ground staff is unable to assist you.
5. Weigh in all options before accepting an offer.
6. Travel insurance comes handy!
