I would never book an international connection with less than 3-4 hours connecting time.

I regularly connect in SIN on SQ to Europe & SA. I always ensure there is minimum of 4 hours connecting time.

As another poster pointed out, paxs on UA HKG-SIN ,final destination is SIN.

There are only handful of flights departing from SIN between 01:00-02:00, UA is aware of this.SIN-SA are the last set of flights to depart SIN.
I am suprise there was a pax connecting to SYD. SIN-SYD departs @ 00:45.
BTW, I do not recall any carrier EX: SIN having a flight departing between 01:00-02:00AM to NRT or North Asia when waiting for my flight to JNB/CPT.
Most flights EX: SIN for Asian destination depart by midnight.

UA has 3 flights from NA( EWR, SFO & ORD) connecting to UA HKG-SIN.
UA will wait for those paxs.
I always take UA to SIN. All of UA flights to SIN arrive around midnight. Be it NRT-SIN or HKG-SIN, UA waits for its connecting Paxs.

BTW, I am looking to book UA to SIN in August. EWR-HKG-SIN connecting is 1 Hour. I have been assured UA will hold HKG-SIN flight. I am not comfortable, thus have not pull the trigger as yet.
The other 2 options with longer connecting time :ORD-HKG-SIN ( will have to do YYZ-ORD @ 8:00AM) SFO- HKG have to overnight in SFO. Do not trust AC to get me ontime to SFO to connect same day.
Well, you may not have recalled or wasn't applicable when you were flying but there were 2 Japanese passport holding pax (not together) that missed flights to Japan. And there was a passenger to SYD as well as other passengers but anyway it's a mute point.

And, as i've continued to say..... lesson learned. Even if it's a valid itinerary on the Aeroplan website I will not pull the trigger unless there is 2.5 to 3 hours connection time.
