Whatever about UAL, it's kind of normal for most airlines not to be shown a seat map until after you have purchased the flight. This may differ, though, if you buy via a 3rd-party website.
I'm curious as to what sort of seating arrangement would be unacceptable, meaning that you would not book if you could see the seating arrangement in advance.
