Contrary to what is reported in the article, I have not found that multi-city bookings on aa.com circumvent married segment restrictions. In fact it can lead to the "this price is no longer available" type of error message that the OP reports.

In the past multi-city bookings on Orbitz did circumvent married segment restrictions, but this no longer seems to work. So I now know no way to get around these restrictions.
