Having been to Fairbanks the weekend before you were for the Governor's Cup, I can vouch for the roads up there being much icier than usual. Not fun in a rental car with crappy summer tires.
@Chugach thanks for the clarification, I thought it seemed a little weird that award tickets would be that hard to get in March! If you see any inaccuracies in my TR, definitely let me know since this was my first time ever in Alaska.

40's is as cold as it ever gets for a lot of Californians haha Although I'm very proud to say I survived -10 F for about 3 hours outside while trying to take pictures of the northern lights in Fairbanks!

@mad_atta, actually even the best displays I saw were "low activity". But it turned out to be pretty spectacular IMO. The following weekend there was a huge solar flare, so the aurora must have been way more amazing... bummed I missed it, but I will definitely go back one day!
