Whether you like my analogies or not is irrelevant, much in the same way that saying the ONLY reason you pay top dollar is to have a seat which reclines into a 'bed' as lets not forget the supposedly premium service and sense of exclusivity being offered by sitting in the forward cabin. If you were taking a 14 hr flight how much of said flight would you be fully reclined for? Lets work that into the percentage of compensation shall we?
It seems to me that the whole purpose of the original article was to somehow exhibit the writer's supposed prowess in getting the company to pay in the end which was evidence by the second example of how some moron booked the wrong tickets and then cried that he had to pay to have them changed.
Civil, criminal or simply not interested, the facts remain that an offer for compensation was made and if the passenger wishes not to take it it's their choice but I fail to see how this goes any further. As you say yourself, if the seat was required to be upright at take off how could AC have known that it was defective until after take off, therefore they should not be held responsible in this instance for the seat not working properly unless of course regular maintanence protocols say otherwise.
I am no champion of AC, but at the end of the day there could have been ZERO compensation offered as is the prerogative of the company! Wouldn't that have caused the bleeding hearts to throw their toys out of their collective pram?!?

And for the record, I love Air Canada as they have always been nice to me and i've never experienced these horror stories that Ive read on this forum.
But back to topic, not everyone here is saying pax should sue. It is just 1 option that someone decided to throw out here..Other options as some have stated would write a letter to higher up management to air out grievances...That's all...This is a forum... People are entitled to their own opinions...But to call someone a 'moron' and stereotyping Americans that they think themselves as "god's gift to mankind"...Well that's a whole different story and totally uncalled for.
And for a 14 hour flight, at least 8 hours is on a lie down position, 5 hours somewhat angled position, and only 1 hour tops to its upright position. I would never pay top dollars to feel 'entitled' to its exclusivity...But that's me. I want to sit on J class because I want to be as comfortable as possible and sleep...And premium services? Believe me, on long haul flights.....eveeerrryyone is sleeping or watching movies while laying down...We don't pester FA's just to feel how it's like to get 'top notch' service.
Youre making it sound like people pay J class so they can be divas and divettes...But that's not the case, people pay for J class to sleep and be as comfortable as possible.
And BTW...regular maintenance protocol says otherwise..it is a serious safety issue if for example the seat on its lie down position would NOT go back to its original landing/take off station.
