All the ORD-SFO flights I listed work (1625, 1800, 2000) as they land before 2300. The Cathay flight SFO-HKG departs at 0100. Just the question of availability. If there's no seats, you can't very well "insist" you be given a couple of them because of a misconnect. Very true, however, you can insist on being upgraded if seats are available in a higher cabin (obviously impossible if you're in First Class already). Perhaps this is difficult when dealing with CX as well. I've (respectfully) demanded with success on a few occasions to be put in F when traveling on disrupted J tickets with no more J seats available.
