This may have added to your confusion when it came to dealing with rebooking issues and effectively advocating for yourself. If the airlines tried to pull that on me, for example, I would have insisted on a SFO or LAX routing or substantial (and I mean HUGE) compensation and demanded to speak with the highest supervisor available. During irrops, airlines try to get you to do the routing that works best for them. It's your obligation to insist on what works best for you.
