Hard to say, but perhaps there was no availability on the midnight flights SFO-HKG or LAX-HKG, or just not enough seats for your entire party. You would also have needed seats to get to the west coast and might have had the same issue there. Just because that's your preferred routing doesn't guarantee there's going to be seats available. AA does have a 1625 ORD-SFO flight that would have worked "if" there were seats, and then subsequent flights at 1800 and 2000 (I was booked on all of those on a travel day last week trying to get home from Ireland). Impossible for any of us to tell you, at this point, whether seats were available on your travel date.

I have filed a complaint on 04/15 with AA, but no respond.
A written complaint via the website? Give them time to catch up to you (at least 10 days). AA had a meltdown on 4/16 and your e-mail is probably caught up in that batch. If you don't hear anything after 10 days, send them a second e-mail calling attention to your first e-mail. They're very good about following up on complaints but when they're overwhelmed it does take a little longer.

Keep in mind that AA usually compensates with miles, so when this is all resolved you may each get some AA miles in your accounts.

How do you know this?
