We're doing this very often, AA agent always move my travel companion next to me. But I haven't done it yet on MCE. Only on regular prefered up to now.
I've taken my significant other on business trips where my flight is paid by my company and her flight is paid for by me (miles and/or cash); a quick phone call to AA easily will place them right next to you. Never had a problem here in MCE or preferred. Also had a time where I was upgraded and she was upgraded to sit next to me after a mistake of not noticing PNRs.
