How do you actually go about tipping chambermaids? I mean, it is practically an institutionalized practice for waitstaff etc. with receipts giving you space to write in a tip, etc. But with chambermaids, you never actually PAY them anything so any exchange of money you basically have to go out of your way for.
So do you approach them in the hallway and hand over some cash? How do you know which one actually cleans your room?
What if it's a multinight stay? Do you tip at the end? And even then how do you know that person cleaned your room for more than one night?
The whole thing is just fraught with awkward questions, so as a result I have never actually tipped a maid.
That being said, for some complimentary services I will almost always tip, like bellhop (buck a bag to $5 max), comp. valet parking at a hotel (few singles), etc.
