IIRC Anything over 1,500 miles (departing before 8PM) gets a hot meal (regardless of breakfest, lunch or dinner timing). The cold meals are on 900-1,500 mile flights (and a few other markets as competition dictates).
I fly between ATL and SAN often and DL serves hot lunches. I haven't had the dinner service yet but that is coming on one of my next two trips.
