Technically, the 14-day advance purchase price is just another fare (like a corporate fare or a government fare), not a discount. Upgrade coupons are OK to stack on top of most fares, but not OK to also combine with a discount. A discount refers to something like the senior discount, AAA discount, Student Advantage discount, etc.
You just have to pay back the discount amount if you want to use an upgrade coupon on an existing reservation. It shouldn't require a new booking to be created. Example - the AAA discount saved you $8 on your original ticket, so the agent will collect $8 and give you the upgrade.
(Note: the very cheap tickets from limited-time sale offers sold in the "YF" inventory class are not compatible with upgrade coupons.)
