Whether or not the fare is the same for one leg in first and one for business, was not made clear on your booking, if it is the case. Simply was not what you thought you paid for. I would be so annoyed of EK changed aircraft/downgraded to two classes and did not offer me anything.
Have you emailed EK or spoken with Skywards and tried to get it sorted properly?
Surely they would assist you.
The argument the other side is that the passenger was not downgraded, the flight was rescheduled to operate with just 2 cabins and the passenger was accommodated in the highest cabin.

With a 1st class ticket, when there is no 1st class cabin, then the passenger is entitled to business class ( if it exists ) or economy otherwise and there is no fare reduction . This is not just EK but general

e.g. with AA if flying MSN-ORD-LHR-CDG , then MSN-ORD will be in economy class since no premium cabin is offered and LHR-CDG would be in business class . Only the ORD-LHR would be in 1st
