What are the full facts. i.e. what was the entire one way journey and what leg no longer had 1st class. Was it just a short connecting flight or a long flight that no longer had 1st class

Even with 24 hours notice, I don't think it is actually that difficult to go online and buy a ticket tbh, so in the respect of wanting to travel 1st class , then yes, it is the passengers' fault not to rebook if it was a big issue to them

There were options if the passengers were wont to change
