Another option is ATL -> LOS (DL) -> JNB (SA) -or- JFK -> ACC (DL) -> JNB (SA).
But either of those might be a bit frightening for an inexperienced traveler.

You might also want to check out the schedules/fares on South African Airways. They offer a non-stop from IAD.
The non-stop is JFK <-> JNB.
IAD <-> JNB has a stop in DKR
