I did a mistake with one digit during check in (replaced a 4 by a 7 or something). As they charge you extra to re-check in, I just forgot about it, and no problems whatsoever anywhere.
I guess that they do not verify everyone in detail.
Yes, if you have an EU passport you should be relatively safe. Ruinair doesn't print your passport number on the boarding pass any more so they can't catch you out at the gate.
