Can't Protect on Other Flights and Keep Original, Really?

Hello,

I don't fly US often and am stuck inbound into CLT due to weather. I will likely miss my connection. US (both phone agent and gate agent) said that they do not protect people on other flights and keep the original confirmed segment.

I am guessing it is true? Do they do this for US elites (I am *A Gold but this is a pure US ticket, not a UA codeshare)? While I understand the reason, it is pretty inconvenient....

I am used to the UA protect-left-and-right approach...

Thanks.
