It is not a passport check per se that includes a detailed review of destination and compliance with visa requirements.
What they do is check the boarding pass, which merely consists of scanning the BP and a greet light comes on. They also check if you have the passport in hand but my recollection is that they have never opened my passport. OR if they did, they barely read the bio page.
The BP check takes less than 10 secs. Nothing like a real immigration control.
