Some airlines have learned from the EU ruling and always try to list a technical cause that would not imply compensation. But it is the airline responsibility to show the cause of the technical problem. Most of the causes are routine causes that would not be regarded as extraordinary circumstances by EU court, e.g. some aircraft part broke down. If the aircraft was damaged by some external causes, then the airline would not be held responsible.
