Since most airlines give you a bonus you are flying for about 1 cent per a mile, which you can use for "status" reasons.
The RDM's are a nice side bennie, but I wouldn't say they are the primary reason for MR's. I'd say the info is somewhat dated as 2-3 CPM MR's are increasingly rare. They still pop-up from time-to-time, but you will generally have to position yourself to get them which drives up the "true" CPM into the 4-5 CPM region. 4 - 5 "true" CPM is probably a more reasonable measure for a decent run at today's prices.
