I take the 33 minute connection and just monitor the status. If it gets delayed at all, the Delta app will allow you to change to a better connection that will work. MSP is usually a favorable place to make a connection.
all well and good until the delay is a 10-min hold before landing, or a ridiculously long taxi in to the gate ... then, as OP says so eloquently (rearranged for effect),

obviously she could stand by for the RJ flight, but still not a great way to start the trip

if OP's objective is to route her friend LAX-GRR with the least amount of potential disruption (i.e., airline-agnostic), I'd say this is probably the best bet
