China is rapidly modernizing in every possible way. Luckily for westerners, in big cities like Shanghai and Beijing, you will rarely if ever see an old eastern style toilet.
I was rather amazed to find in the new Terminal 3 of the Xi'an Xianyang airport, which was completed last year, most of the toilets were squatters, with only the handicapped stall having a western toilet seat. No toilet paper except in the dispenser by the door either.
