On aircanada.com, before your flight, you can add a $7 option to your ticket, that gives you a meal and a snack, which would normally cost $9. Every time I've done this, they have asked me what I want and brought me my food before starting the regular front to back service. And I had no status at the time, so that wasn't a factor.
