This is slightly off-topic: I was looking in Trip Reports to get a sense of what other Business Class flights are like. We want to fly SFO_SYD which we normally book with upgrade certificates to go from Y to C. Now there seem to be issues w United releasing upgradeable seats(See UA forum) and I'm exploring other options.
Anyway, if we were going to PAY for business class from the west coast to SYD, I was looking at Qantas or Air New Zealand. We are Star Alliance members, but also have some measely miles on Qantas from domestic flights, so it would be worth getting QF miles.
It sounds as if from your report the 380 has a great business product? How is the drinks service? Negative reports on the Qantas Forum.
If paying suggestion is QF of course but I would never suggest getting more QFF points.
NZ issue is the fact that from SFO it is older Business Premier seats, although good not as comfortable as the QF A380 seats and not as good if you are travelling as a couple.
NZ also has very limited Business Class service across the Tasman, best connection maybe an an A320 which is Economy.

Note chances of getting 2 award seats in Business Class on both airlines is not very high unless you are a gambler on last minute awards space.
