With the EC seat you also get 50% more seat recline, priority boarding and free alcoholic drinks should you want. I would take a chance on the EC seat given the extra leg room as well as the above. And you will get meals a bit earlier, etc.
Have you checked other flights that would get you to AMS around the same time or is it too late for that. It might be worth paying the penalty to get a flight with better seat choices.

Too late for changing, it is a hastily planned weekend trip US to Europe. I have mixed feelings because in a window seat I can lean against the wall, and perhaps be a bit more successful at catching some sleep... Alcohol - that's OK - I can fill up at lounges at both BOS and AMS
. Plus, I have quite a few drink coupons.
