That is certainly a method, but with a caveat: airlines frown on this practice. Don't try this with the same carrier, or same alliance if claiming miles.
Only really a problem if the flights booked violate minimum stay requirements or other fare rules. If you are staying for an extended period of time at each end this is less likely to be a concern.
