Contact China Southern on the hotel room, they may not want to provide since it is a daytime wait, but they might if you insist that it's 14 hours and you'll be on a long haul transit and need rest. If they offer, take it, as it serves as your "get out of jail" (CAN terminal) free card. Even if you don't intend to stay there and instead escape to the city.

Fallback position with them is to insist that you want to take advantage of the legal transit without visa, and go into the city. They can provide you with a pass or at least an escort to get you to and through Immigration. Normally you shouldn't need this at any other Chinese airport, but CAN does it's own thing and we don't have enough reports yet to determine whether they've abandoned their attempts to keep transitees without visas in the terminal.

Remember in China, the normal procedure of citizenry vs officialdom is to be persistent and stubborn and keep asking over and over until the answer changes to the one you want.
