Completely unfair. You could count on one hand the documented instances of voter fraud in the last election, versus the organized voter suppression campaigns in minority neighborhoods of states like AZ, PA, and WI (intimidating billboards misleadingly claiming you need ID when you don't, flyers circulated with the wrong election date, etc.). There are also millions of Americans (
11% of citizens, to be precise) -- including
WWII veterans -- who don't possess what many states now deign to be valid voter ID or are
victims of voter roll purges.
And in a free country, there is no legal requirement to carry such ID except for the
privilege of certain activities like driving. Voting is a fundamental
right, as is freedom of movement in general. Thus, air travelers can waive the ID requirement if they agree to other screening measures. If you're walking down the street and a cop stops you, you may have to verbally identify yourself, but they can't arrest you simply for lacking ID.
