Finally managed to register at FlyerTalk after being a long time browser !

AA were offering an unpublicised sale for flights with the EY AUH-IAD sector, with some absurdly low fares; think 1150 in Y for AUH-LAX return

However as much as i wanted to save money, i resisted the temptation to book a flight with the AUH-IAD flight as its a 10am departure from AUH, and a 15 hours flight on top of that, probably taking an hour more than i would expect for as it is a 340 and not a 777.

15 hour flights starting with a red eye departure at 1 or 2am are not that bad if you can sleep as you can cut 5-6 hours from the 15h.
However starting at 10 am, and arriving when its 1am in Abu Dhabi means 15 hours of travel when most people are likely to be awake

The return flight is much better with a 10pm departure from IAD and is a bit over 13 hours, so sleeping 6 hours would mean ~7 hours flying when awake.

The fact that it is a 340 is actually a blessing in terms of seat configuration in Y as you get a 2-4-2 and not the cramped 3-4-3 of a 777. The tradeoff is the slightly longer flying time
