Second: It's the AS Visa Not the AA Visa... reading that makes it sound like you'd be referring to the American Airlines visa card... and we don't want that.

Third: Given your flights are in Dec/Jan (read: busy holiday season), you're probably not going to see award redemption rates decrease. Though AS does release inventory at different times of the year... but it can be a calculated risk that could potentially not pay off. The second part of this is the different redemption rates: Super Saver, Choice or Full-Flex. Click 'here' for more info on these differences.

If you can find a Super Saver... it's the lowest redemption rate (unless there's a mileage 'sale')... but Full-Flex will allow you to cancel at any-time without a penalty. If you're husband was to use the Money & Miles, I'm pretty sure he'd be potentially subject to change fees, depending on the type of fare... looks like westcoaster answered this piece for you.
Thanks for gently correcting me on the correct abbreviation for Alaska - I definitely would NOT want to mistake you know who for Alaska! Thanks for the info . . . with your advice and the advice of others here we were able to book our flight to Montana for virtually nothing - yee haa!!!!!
