FYI to the OP...some rooms do not have private bathrooms; they are shared. It's a great location; just make sure you know what kind of room you're getting.

I am a single woman who lives in the Financial District and while it is definitely a subway ride from midtown it is VERY quiet and everything is super accessible by train with every main line stopping down here (usually express trains, too!) - and all located within a few blocks of each other due to the shape of the island. I live near the "Club Quarters" on Wall Street and am very pleased with how accessible all of Manhattan is, how safe the area is, and how quiet it is. If you plan on visiting on a weekend hotels down here can be QUITE affordable as well ($150-$175/night) - which is not the case with the rest of Manhattan.
