So where would you clear customs? That makes no sense at all. Although the Irish Republic is a separate country there has been an open border for many years. You only have to show you boarding pass to show that you joined the flight from the UK and no passport is required.
I have to say that I am uncertain now you mention it as you certainly have to go through customs on the way back to the UK - indeed I think that the same happens on Jersey flights? This is due to the tax differences as far as I know.
