We are going to Italy in May as well. We are flying in to Milan then taking the train to get down to Florence and exploring Tuscany. Then the train again down to Rome and flying back out of FCO.

I agree the train is a good option. I believe we are only on the train for 90 minutes from Florence to Rome and even less time from Milan to Florence. Seems to be the best way to get around the country.
