Whilst I agree that I we shouldn't expect a free upgrade, the issue is more of a possible mislead. For ever and every Q, on any flight, from anywhere to anywhere, as always been upgradeable. Now, for this one off, the rules is changed. What happens when it happens again on another route and then another and another. Eventually Q will become another W/V, perhaps the cheap Biz classes too.
Maybe I'm exaggerating a little, but you get the idea. I just think its a bit of a mislead.
In looking through most of the current specials there is a bold disclaimer on the bottom that
all fares are non-upgradable. At the moment Q continues to earn miles on international flights but the current setup begs the question if this will change.
In doing a few dummy bookings with domestic specials it appears that W special to CNX is 2035 THB (and non-upgradable) while a W regular fare is 2535 THB with no indication it's restricted in that way.
At least when you're booking online you know if the purchase is being made from the Specials page or from the regular page. If one is purchasing from a TA and buying a W/V/Q or J/D fare then the fare rules will need to be parsed for restrictions.
