I do the same, except with my one and only carry-on. I don't always board early, and try to help by keeping my one bag under the seat. I travel light.
Except on international trips, where I claim a whole overhead bin.
I put my backpack under the seat even if I have 1 piece as well. I used to sometimes put it up, but a pax once smashed his way-too-big-bag on top of mine, cracking my laptop screen.
