To get the $500 in value you would have to go through the Ultimate Rewards travel agent. The prices are generally good, but you must have already earned the points.

Search the Ultimate Rewards forum, however. If you are flying United or staying at a Hyatt, for instance you may be able to get over $400 in value from partner transfers.
