I don't understand this fear of checking luggage. I've traveled twice a year from LAX to BKK for 15 years.. on various airlines including Thai, EVA and Cathay and have never had one piece of checked luggage lost or late. Most of the time, by the time you manage to get through Passport Control, your checked bags show up, so you really don't save that much time with carry on's either.
