I have experienced that.
To make matters more confusing, I just called the EY Premium line (Manchester call centre), got a lovely chap who managed to unblock 1A for me.
He did this again on the return sector.
He said "The system recognise your Gold status so I can pick these for you."
I called back 30 mins later to request 1A on some shorter, separate sectors, and the agent said it's under airport control, she cannot select them. I asked to speak to a supervisor, stating it was just done for me and the conversation goes nowhere.
I just hung up!
