It appears the OP is attempting to avoid checking on the way out, but wants something collapsible he can pack in one of his other bags to hold the items he purchases while in the US. Given the number of bags the OP is taking with him on the flights, it appears that if he uses the collapsible bag, he'll have to check something coming back. It also appears that he doesn't have the same time constraints on his return that he does on his trip to the US so he doesn't mind picking up checked luggage.
Maybe not a whole lot of difference in the end because the Market Tote is only slightly larger than the XS (although as an open-ended bag, a few more things could be heaped in) and only slightly cheaper ($25 versus $30) than the XS. Given the quality of Red Oxx's fabric and construction, the Market Tote might hold a decent amount of items, such as "books, clothing, electronics, small kitchen appliances like a toaster or perhaps even a food processor."
Just another option--assuming I have understood the OP's needs and correctly recall how good the Market Tote might be.
Actually I have the same challenge in Toronto both inbound and outbound: 01:20:00 to get through customs, go through security, and get to my distant gate. I'd rather not deal with checked luggage, not even gate-checked luggage. I'd be flying out with nothing but a small personal bag (leaning toward the Western Flyer).
What makes me a little hesitant about the Market Tote is that it's open-ended. If I'm the last person aboard a crowded flight, I may be forced to gate-check something.
