Lots of divers don't have lots of time to plan extra stop-overs. And if one is connecting to a live-aboard and the equipment doesn't make it, then one can be out of luck. Most live-aboards carry a limited amount of equipment and require divers to reserve ahead. And the live-aboards wait for no one. And in these remote destinations, there is no option of catching up with the boat a day later as they may be with cruise ships.
You are making my point.

That is EXACTLY why you get to a connection point earlier, even if requires an extra night. If they don't have the time to plan stopovers to ensure they get where they are going and when they need to be there, then maybe they really don't have the necessary time required to be traveling that far. My guess is that a lot of frequent flyers who are serious divers read that article were also thinking they were dumb to count on a 45-minute connection to be a cinch.
