I intensely dislike immigration procedures at any intermediate airport. If I was flying to the US I would prefer flying via London on the outward leg then direct to my final destination and via New York then direct to my final destination on the return leg as that would avoid immigration until my final destination in both directions. That way I won't be worrying about making a connection and, in the case of arriving in the US, avoid the need for a longer connection time.
Either that or fly via a third country where I stay "out of the country" during transit.
I tend to agree, but... The exception in my mind is DUB pre-clearance. The whole process is infinitely more civilised than on actual US soil, and the APD saving (if you're willing to risk a DIY connection) sweetens the deal.
