If it's just long term backup, where you just need a place to keep stuff safe, not where you will be needing to get at them all the time, glacier is going to be almost impossible to beat. There are some free utilities out there to upload the files and get them when it's necessary, and there is no cost to upload your files.
It's not a solution if you need to access your files in minutes (it can take several hours for your files to be available when you need them) but if all you are doing is saving copies of pictures in case your hard drive goes up in smoke, it's going to be hard to beat.
Note that this is not the real time S3 storage solution from Amazon that costs many times more. It's dead storage, where you don't need to constantly access the data, and are willing to wait several hours for it if you do.
Yeah, I'm looking for a long-term backup, and I can definitely wait for a few hours or more to retrieve my pictures. Glacier sounds incredibly cheap for what I'm looking for -- thanks for the suggestions oblisk and cordelli!
