There are only a handful of the 747-400 routes where the planes are less than 80% most of the time.......
As you say for the big routes to use this tiddly little thing when LHR slots are so valuable - just seems a bit wierd...

I doubt it is clear cut as that suggests. A combination of 787s and A380s could replace part of the 747 fleet and provide an overall capacity increase.
E.g. two Mid-J 747s on a route such as MIA provide in total 28F/104J/72W/470Y.
One A380 plus one 787-8 would provide 14F/132J/80W/457Y - a slight increase overall but broadly comparable. A 787-9 or -10 in 3 class config would obviously provide a bigger increase.
Of course one implication of that is more A380s are needed to balance the equation....
