They are flying the aircraft and don't have time for Parents demading the movie be turned off or flipping the screen off. No need to act in a way that they had to know the pilots name.

They were told we can't change the movie and that caused the family to need the Captains name? The right move would be to complain about the movie after they landed. The captain did them a favor. He got them off the aircraft and they were able to watch 3rd Rock or some other comedy series in the next flight to BWI. This is what they wanted, he assisted. No need for angry people on the Captains Aircraft. Angry people on an airplane don't play nice.
Really?

How many of us, when faced with a customer service issue, have asked for names of people involved so we can make a complaint? How many here have asked for GA's or FA's names when they've received bad service here so they can complain?

Asking for names isn't out of the realm of possibility on any planet I live on, and asking for the Captain's name shouldn't be a big deal because it's announced once or twice at the beginning of the flight!

If the Captain is clearly in the right, then providing his name should have been a no brainer because the complaint wouldn't have merit.

If the Captain's in the wrong, then they'd have an interest in not giving it out. It's much like TSA agents hiding their badges or refusing to identify themselves when a complaint is involved, yet will readily give it if there's a compliment to be filed.

"Security reasons" is a BS argument, and quite honestly, it's one that UA overuses. Knowing someone's name isn't a breach of security.
