Another suggestion
Have a look at Greenwich hotels - many are close to the station and still have reasonable rates. The Novotel backs onto the station, is a nice place to stay.

You then have the DLR and the Mainline rail service at your doorstep - you can be in London Bridge in 15 minutes.
